meeting friends and keeping friends....

Maybe young motherhood is kind of like living overseas.  You don't get to really pick your friends.  Your kids do.  You kind of get thrown into friendship by your kids.  At least when they are little.  Or you get thrown out of friendship by your kids, they get sick, or get lice, or get a wacky, impossible nap schedule, or your kids bite or they just don't like another person's kids.

Living overseas can feel a little like that when it comes to making English speaking friends.  You kind of just get thrown into a jumble of people and you might come up trumps.  It doesn't help when you are like me.  Queen Awkward.  Today at play group I had the gall to ask the hostess if her husband wet his pants as a child.  It seemed important at the time.  Really important.  I wanted to share my interesting parenting fact of the year gleaned from a real life friend back in the USA.  But looking back perhaps I don't know the hostess well enough to be asking about her husband's peeing habits as a tyke.

To make matters worse she miss heard under the din of the children.  She thought I was asking about her husband's current bed wetting problems.

Nothing like asking a friend about her husband's bed wetting to put a damper on the friendship.
