when I grow up......

When Abe grows up he wants to drive an auto rickshaw.  Some days.  Some days he wants to drive an "X-ah-vay-tor".  Some days he wants to drive a hot air balloon.  Some days he wants race motorcycles.

When I was a little I remained singularly fixed upon my future.  I would be a teacher.  I began my career by teaching my teddy bears and lovely dolly Strawberry Shortcake.  Then I wrecked all cousinly affections by forcing my family members through summer school.  I think my aunt may still bear a grudge about some particular scholastic moment.  One of my cousins may be in therapy due to my over zealous teaching.  I was nine you see.

Since then I've never wavered in my passion.  I taught in the public schools in the US, a private boarding school in the foothills of the Himilayas, English in the Middle East, and a private subsidized Christian school in the USA (one of the finer academic establishments I've ever had the honor of working for).  I've substituted.  I've taught adults, children, teens, and High Schoolers.  I love teaching.

Never.  May I repeat Never, did I Ever want to be a librarian.   I am discovring  buried beneath that passion to teach a secret desire festered unbeknownst to me to be a librarian.  Madame Librarian Me.  We have lots of books and my kids like to read but in a place with no libraries I love to lone books to Little E and her family.  I love taking them our books to enjoy.  Librarians must have this delight.  Watching old favorites walk out the door and then bounce back in.

I also love reading aloud to my kids and others.  At play group Abe seldom listens as the grass is unique.  He gets Read-Aloud-Mom everyday so I can't compete with green grass.  But I still love to read aloud to his friends and of course Zana who plops on my lap.

It is our day of rest and I am thinking of cataloging our kid's books.  But it seems perhaps an unrealistic dream.  Maybe I am not born to be a librarian but I still confess I love the feel, smell and look of books.  I love the idea of being a librarian with a little van driving around lending books.

Till I teach again maybe I will library.
