Zana prefers the center lap. Abe graciously puts her interests before his own and sits off on the side lap piece most days, most of the time. A kind of literary Siberia for toddlers. Our reading habits grew immensely with a fresh infusion of books I hauled over land and sea. Thanks to Marjorie, Susan and Auntie "Murffy" our library doubled in a day. Even after two weeks of being back from my whirlwind dream trip to the USA the kiddos cannot fit enough books into the daylight hours.
Currently Zana and Abe battle out lap space on Papa while I write. Play group fell upon us today once again. Half way driving to the oasis in the middle of our city I often wonder to myself what crazy energy boost tricked me into venturing out to play group but I always return home happy. My kids love hippy girl E and her lovely mommy. Today after play group it was our joy to see another friend who has been displaced by the rising river. Yes, whole parts of our city are currently covered by the Ganga.
Mother Ganga rose above her banks and homes disappeared, roads disappeared, gulleys became swimming pools too deep for adults. The road to my friend's home is chest deep in places. She and her two children, while her husband was out of town, moved themselves to another home while their landlord moved into their home. Waist high water swirls through the ground floor.
My hubster on his way out to the village on Monday drove the little car through deep water. This is out of the city in a place where the river curls around and usually silently and unseen sweeps by a distance from the road. Now it pours over the road. Our city is feeling the reality of a natural force causing havoc. Our neighborhood is untouched and will remain so, though the monsoons continue to fall in force as we live far from the river. We shall see how it impacts other neighborhoods as a city holds its breath when it rains.
