Saturday last we bundled ourselves into the world's cheapest car, the Nano, and we headed northwest 300 km to Lucknow our state's capitol. It is a city jam packed with heritage. Rich Mughal architecture coupled with the brilliant Raj period buildings, standing the weather of time with illusive grace that reveals greatness. Lucknow threw me back almost ten years to a city across the border, Lahore. The airy streets, the parks, the gardens, the mystic ambience and the layer upon layer of history.
Lucknow's history contains more violence than Lahore's and the blood of many was spilt upon the green vastness of many of the parks. There is a feeling of timelessness within a very modern bustling city.
The seven hour journey took our little family nine wonderful hours. I love Indian country side. I love sleeping in the car. I love picnics and have learned from a wonderful mom named Anne E. that planning ahead a cooler bag of goodies blesses everyone. We stopped for two long breaks. One for breakfast and one for lunch. Both were shaded picnic spots with lovely views of the diverse country side and peoples of India.
We landed in Lucknow and headed directly out to the zoo which was a great hit! You can talk about the height of a giraffe but to see it in actuality is a wonderful thing. We took a slow, crowded train ride around the zoo for about fifty cents. We walked and walked and played and played and talked about God's amazing creation. We returned to our hotel tired, sweaty and happy. What a wonderful day.
