Chai Shop Chivalry

We are a traffic stopping trio.  Myself, Abe and Zana.  Of course it is in part my skin, their grins but mainly just the stroller which I am weaving down gulleys that have never seen such a contraption.  These gulleys are so narrow people have to turn sideways to let me pass.  We truck through eliciting comments like;

"White Person, White Person, Come LOOK!  White Person."

"Good grief there are two, two babies, Look White Twins!!"

"Come, Come, Come, Look at that..... car!!!" (there is no word for stroller)

"Do you think her boy can't walk?"

Not to long ago I was on my way to visit a friend, when I was hit.  I was walking blithely along pushing my children when a worker got his load to close and a large plastic container clunked against my head making a loud dull whack.

Instantly the chai stall of men, sipping chai, reading newspapers, daydreaming, and talking about us walking by erupted in an explosion of concern and anger.  I had to step between the poor worker and a group of men ready to inflict bodily harm.  It was one of my better moments in this crazy city.

I am not a man hater but at times the constant haranguing of men young and old can wear on my friendliness.  This was one of those moments that I just wanted to sit and cry with thanksgiving for a culture that cares and for men that were so chivalrous.  I walked on my way with a grin firmly in place, and a faint headache.  Isn't that this city, so surprising with a hint of headache.
